BCFCSN - British Columbia Forestry Service Continuing Studies Network Courses - Environmentally sound road construction practices are critical to sustainable forest resource management in BC. The Resource Tenures Branch of the BC Forest Service, in cooperation with the BC Institute of Technology, has developed courses in Forest Engineering Technology to provide up-to-date training opportunities for technical and professional forestry personnel.
These courses are designed to provide environmentally-based training for individuals responsible for planning, designing, construction, maintaining, and deactivating Forest Roads.
Most of these courses can be expanded to accommodate audience requirements and depth of instruction.

Introduction to engineering requirements for the Forest Practices Code
One day seminar. BCIT credit eligible. RRET 4420. BCFCSN
This 1-day session covers the fundamental requirements of access planning, construction design and layout, maintenance and deactivation as required under the Forest Practices Code Act. The concepts, terminology, and definitions required to interpret the FPC Regulations and conduct road inspections are covered. Students are given the opportunity to conduct inspections in a classroom situation. Successful completion of an assignment will lead to BCIT credits in the forestry Engineering Technology Program.
Audience - Technologists, Professionals, and others involved in planning, inspecting, monitoring, or supervising Forest Road construction, Maintenance, and Deactivation.
Forest Road Construction Practices and Procedures
Three day seminar. BCIT credit eligible. RRET 3310/3311. BCFCSN
This 3-day seminar consists of seven modules including;
- Construction Survey
- Subgrade Construction
- Drainage structures
- Surfacing
- Revegetation and Erosion Control
- Inspections and quality Assurance
It is focused on practical applications and techniques, and is based on classroom analyses of case study situations. Successful completion of an assignment will lead to BCIT credits in the Forestry Engineering Technology Program.
Three day seminar. BCIT credit eligible. RRET 4410. BCFCSN
This 3-day seminar consists of seven modules including;
- History of Forest Roads
- Slope process
- Forest Roads and slope stability
- Management of water and slope; geometry
- Erosion control and sediment management
- Deactivation planning and implementation
This course includes a field day which allows participants to view deactivation in a local setting. Successful completion of an assignment will lead to BCIT credits in the Forestry Engineering Technology Program.
Audience - This introductory course has been developed for field personnel such as technologists, professionals, and others involved in planning, inspecting, monitoring, or supervision of Forest Road Construction, and Deactivation.
This three day advanced deactivation seminar is very strong on the practical side with the emphasis on field work. (one day class - two days field)
Audience - Field personnel involved with deactivation planning and supervisory personnel involved with deactivation Planning and Supervising.
Pre-requisite - The three day deactivation course or equivalent field experience and knowledge.
Road Construction for Machine Operators
One day seminar. BCFCSN
Appropriate road construction maintenance and deactivation practices are emphasized in this 1-day workshop. Common problems are reviewed and practical solutions highlighted. Acceptable practices under the BC Fisheries/Forestry guidelines and Forest Practices Code are also reviewed.
Audience - Backhoe operators, cat skinners, drillers, blasters, culvert installers, owner/operators, road foremen/supervisors, technicians working for timber companies or government agencies.
ELK - Kay and Associates, International Training Consultants Courses can be custom-modifiable to suit site conditions and can be targeted to specific objectives and adapted to a variety of types and expertise of personnel to be trained.
The courses can be modified the day before the class session with digital camera slides of the present operating areas and conditions taken that same day.
Most of these courses can be reduced or expanded to accommodate audience requirements and depth of instruction.
Forest Practices Code Upgrade & Controlling Costs
One day Class with an optional "on the job" follow-up with the machine operators.
Eric evaluates site working practices with a field site visit prior to the One day seminar to review working practices and discuss priorities and concerns with Management and Engineering. The one day seminar features slides (taken electronically) on the day before of actual working conditions and situations and features focussed discussion. This can be followed up with an optional "one-on-one" with the operators on the job at their work-site the day after the seminar.
